History

Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG reaches back to the year 1919. Anton Raky, engineer and pioneer in modern drilling technology and oil drilling, founded the company Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.

The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937 when the manufacturing facility was purchased by the Salzgitter Group for constructing drilling equipment. The company purchased the grab product division from PEINER AG in 1986, and developed PEINER into an international brand in the years that followed. Currently, SMAG is the world's market leader in grabs used in global cargo handling, waste disposal and agriculture.
